Day Four: Animal, Concrete Poem, Enjambment #writing201

I am still behind in my poetry class (four days to be exact). I am determined to finish all my assignments.

In any case, for Day 4 the theme was Animal, Concrete Poetry, Enjambment.

If you do not know what is "concrete poetry"

Concrete or shape poetry is poetry in which the typographical arrangement of words is as important in conveying the intended effect as the conventional elements of the poem, such as meaning of words, rhythm, rhyme and so on. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/concretepoetry)
If you do not know what is "enjambment"
Enjambment (in verse) the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, couplet, or stanza  (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enjambment)

I had a lot of different ideas of which animal I wanted to use, but then I could not think of how to portray it with the style of poetry.

I wanted to do something fun and decided the small green tree frog fit.

I think that the poem is simple but conveys the movement and action of the frog hunting his prey.

Day Three - Acrostic, Trust, Internal Rhyme #writing201

I am several days late on this assignment.

The theme was trust and I wanted to incorporate what I am dealing with in real life into this assignment. It took me a while to compose the poem because I wanted to convey my thoughts and employ the poetry techniques.

I volunteer for the local United Way on the investment committee. One of the programs supported by the local UW is a group home called Bowers-Rodgers. They can serve children from birth to 20 years but the oldest I think they have had in the home is 17 years old.

Growing up in home where my parents loved me, I cannot imagine what it must be like for a child to have to be separated from their parents.

While we were doing our site visit, a young boy approached our group and mentioned in conversation that the group home was safer than where he lived before.

This poem is dedicated to Bower's Rodgers group home and similar homes like this where the adults care for abused and neglected children while trying to teach them that not all adults are untrustworthy.

The Group Home
Grateful for a bed to lay my head
Realizing my moans because I lost my home
One day hopefully I will have no concerns
Until then I must come to terms
Pulled from my mother for my own protection
Habituating now with other children happily as a temporary family
Oasis, haven, refuge, shelter
My confidence in adults was like shattered remains
Each caregiver here has a positive effect, while helping us all connect

Limerick: Journey, Limerick, Alliteration #writing201

This is my second day of the Poetry Writing 201 class.

This assignment was harder than I anticipated because I am not used to writing in rhyme. I could think of 2 rhyming words and was stumped thinking of a third that would make sense as to what idea I wanted to convey.

I am not sure that I captured all of the points in the prompt, but I count it as a victory that I came up with a limerick in the first place.

Precarious Winter Journey

Snow turned to sleet freezing everything all night
Trees encased in ice at morning night
Used to stand in a row
Now heavy hanging low
Struggling to hang on with all their might

Haiku: Water prompt #writing201

I am participating in the Writing 201: Poetry class

Today's assignment is to write a poem about water in the form of a haiku. I was supposed to try to use a simile but I could not work it in. I am still thinking about what simile I could use. I might post something else later.

Winter

Icicles, frozen
Water suspended in time
Too cold for my taste
